General Questions:
Q: When will
X be released?
A: We moved the release date of X to the first quarter of 1999. We will publish
the exact release dates and publishers later for the different countries.
Q: Will
there be a playable demo?
A: We hope to be able to release a playable demo in February 99. (was
schedduled for September.. Sorry!)
Q:
How many CDs or DVDs will X use?
A: We are trying every trick and technique (e.g: very high compression of all
audio files) to make X fit on only ONE CD. We just hate it to swap CD's in the middle of
playing.
Q:
Will X be published in country xyz?
Q: Will there be a version in
language xyz?
A: X will be published in most European countries and North America. There will definitely
be an English as well as a German version. Other versions and markets will hopefully
follow.
Q: Will X support network / online / Internet
playing?
A: This version of X is NOT an online game! (<-- Note that this sentence does
NOT contain any statement whatsoever about the future ;-)
Technical Questions:
Q:
Which graphic cards are supported?
Q: Will there be a
special version for graphic card xyz?
A: X works on all graphic cards with 3D hardware support through Direct 3D (this
should be more or less every card). To squeeze the last bit of visual quality and
performance out of every single 3D card, X analyzes the hardware on startup. As you can
see here, we try to handle as many 3D
cards as anyhow possible :)
Q:
What is needed to get 3D positional sounds?
A: 3D positional sound is supported through Direct Sound as well as Aureal's A3D. It works
with software emulated Direct 3D Sound on every soundcard, but is faster and sounds better
with cards that support hardware accelerated 3D positional sound.
Q: Does X support Forcefeedback
Joysticks?
A: Yes.
Q:
Does X support 3Dnow? MMX? AGP?
Short A: Yes
Long A: Some of these CPU extensions are used specially by X, and some are supported
through special DLL versions of Direct 3D.To get more information about these technologies
and how they affect the performance of games check out the websites of AMD and Intel who
also hold the trademarks to these names.
Q: How realistic are the
physics of spaceflight in X?
A: Realism is a nice thing to archive, but there is one thing which has a
higher priority to us. Playability. One example for this is the speed of your spaceship.
The X-Fighter does have a maximum speed, and quite a low inertia, making it easy to
maneuver.
Q:
Which graphic card does X look best on?
Short A: Impossible.
Long A: Since X even runs on the first generation 3D accelerators which are VERY widely
spread (S3 Virge, ATI Rage etc.) the visual quality and performance can be quite
different. In general you can say that on these first generation accelerators, you can
only play X in low resolutions (512*384 for example is a nice compromise between visual
quality and performance), while on newer cards (Voodoo 1 and 2, Power VR, Mattrox G200,
Riva etc.) you can play at much higher resolutions and get more detailed 3D models
and light effects.
Questions about the game and it's story:
Q: Can I
run my own factories?
A: Yes. But you will have to buy the necessary equipment for it from one of
the X universe races. That requires a lot of money, and at least one race that still is
willing to sell you something. So think twice before you start shooting everybody and rob
other peoples spaceships.
Q: Can I land
on planets?
A: In X you find yourself in the middle of a universe, completely different
from your old home (which happens to be a little blue planet that might be familiar to
you). Creatures in this part of the universe live on gas planets, or on waterworlds, and
most of their live happens in space. Spacestations are the places where people meet, and
factories are floating in free space to safe time and energy. So NO there is no need to
land on planets. If you are into stones so much, how about you grab yourself an asteroid
and make it into a silicon mine instead?
Q: How big
is the X universe?
Q: How many different spaceships exist?
A: Nonono... we are not going to spoil anything here. Play X and find out for
yourself :-)
Q: Can I own
other ships?
A: Yes, you can OWN other ships, but you will not fly them yourself. Since
your X-Fighter comes from another area of the universe, and uses much more advanced
technology then the spaceships you can buy in the X universe, the only purpose of buying
other ships is to increase your cargo capacity. The other thing you can do is enhance your
X-Fighter with compatible technology like better shields and lasers (see next question).
Q: How
can I enhance my spaceship?
A: After you get the races living in the X universe to help you, they can
upload new information into your ship computer. They can also help you to make your ship
compatible with some of their technology. So if you choose to earn a lot of money by
trading for example, you can later invest this money in goodies for your ship. So it is
always important to make some friends in the X universe. While it might be easier to
attack and fight with some races, it sure is not a good idea to become an enemy to all the
races in the X universe.
Q: Is the game
open ended? Is there a script I will have to follow?
Q: What category of games does X
fit into?
A: It's not easy to find game category that X fits into. Most important of all, X gives
you the freedom to play the game in millions of different ways, yet it does have a
storyline. X has a lot of fighting action, still we don't call it an action game. There
are a some management skills required to do successful trading and to run your own
factory, still we don't call it a trading simulation. And even though X does have a story,
it is up to you if this story has an end and what kind of end that might be.
