Job at egosoft: MD scripting and mission author
Hello everybody,
we have just posted an advert for a job offer at egosoft that might be interesting for one of you guys, so I paste the official text here. Contact me at bernd@egosoft.com if you are interested!
---
While located in Germany, EGOSOFT is an international team dedicated to making the best space simulation games in existence. Our office is near Aachen in the very western end of Germany directly next to the Dutch and Belgian borders (so living in these countries and travelling to work is easily possible too).
Founded in 1990, EGOSOFT first developed just for the German market. Our focus on Space games with a much more international target audience, started with 1999s X: Beyond the Frontier, the first part in the ongoing X space game series. We are looking to only slightly extend our 20 people team.
Mission development for X4:Foundations
This job offer is partially a designer partially a programmer. You will be designing missions set in the X universe, learn the background fiction of this very deep game universe, so you can write story and dialogue for the involved NPCs and also write the scripts for these missions and stories in and XML based script language.
Required skills:
While knowledge of our primary programming language C++ is certainly welcome and would allow you to branch out into other areas, this is not a requirement for this position. Documentation of the MD scripting language is publicly available for moders of our games on the egosoft WIKI.
Additional requirements:
Interest in science and science fiction
Ability to write and tell stories
Desire to design worlds
Ability to work in a team
Experience as a scripter and writer

Re: Job at egosoft: MD scripting and mission author
While I would love to finally put the step in my career from java developer to game developer. I've been deep diving in md script for the past two weeks now and barely anything works as I expected it to work according to docs or other peoples explanations.
This job would give me personally way to much stress and aggravation. Maybe move from md scripting to an actual script language for scripting like Lua being used for the UI now ... then we can talk

Good to hear that Egosoft is putting manpower/investment into missions.
I hope you find someone skilled who will create some nice missions that I remember from X3:TC (both generic and plot missions).

Dang, to late.
I've worked in the publictation industry in south germany as a coder first, then project manager and helped to create many different successful magazines and wrote for nearly 2 decades, too. I am (and always was) a huge - nerdy - SciFy and gaming fan.
Today I'm self employed (total different area) and i fear I don't fit in the searched pattern anymore (age and lack of time). "Argh!". *Sehr schade, denn ich hätte richtig Lust auf ein solches Abenteuer*
But I wish you all the best and good luck finding a young and engaged talent. *toi toi toi". Would love to see/consume a good X story telling again in the future.
Keep up the faith and good work Bernd, because DE needs moar inspiration, devs, guidance, tutorship and talents for this part of (very big, potential) industry!

I'm glad you're looking to expand the team with this - I think the (relative) lack of mission types/plots is one of the big things I'd like changed with future versions of X4 besides the general bug fixes/etc.
Good luck finding a taker for the position!

They will need someone younger anyway, wheel some of the older guys out onto the veranda to get some sunshine....

I was used to make good SciFy stories when I was young! But someone younger as I am to wheel me around would be fine too. indeed
Or maybe I can reprogram a captured Xenon Ai to do this job additionally. *Roger Roger*

Too bad I'm not a native speaker, that sounds really promising.

There are only two native English speakers working at Egosoft. So that alone shouldn't discourage you from applying.

This part of the wiki? XRWIKI Mission Director Guide
Are there many additions/changes to the way X4 handles these MD scripts not updated or expanded on from XR?

Is it okay to "bump" this thread? I think more people need to see this, if only to know the good news!

If you look at their job requirements, not a problem as far as I know
Besides, in this day and age, a lot of programmers work from home anyways, there is always conference via internet for that

Re: Job at egosoft: MD scripting and mission author
From my point of view the best way to mod yourself into a pre-election (additional to the ability to write a proper -obligatory- job application writing) would be a MD sample, or a compareable whitepaper to give people of influence and decision-makers an idea of your working and (more important) potential. "Ex ante" if you will. Coding|scripting example shall not be perfect, be modest and leave intended room for propositions.
Wish all the best to the candidates! *fingercrossing, thumbs and toitoitoi*
PS: In any case, your native language would be secondary, or even third-rate if U match the criterias... I hope so.
Good luck!
