Lasertowers - what is the difference between beam and Gamma HEPT mode?

In Beam mode the lasertower has a max range of 2000m, the damage at the target is high and the hit rate is good. In Gamma Hept mode the range is reduced to just 1200m, but the firing rate is much higher, the hit rate and damage lower than in Beam mode. Also Beam mode looks more powerful.
