My complex blew up! Why?

There are a few reasons this might happen:
  • Enemy action.

If a race hates you enough, they may well start going after your stations as well as your ships. If this happens, you should get a warning that your complex is under attack.

  • Police action.

If your complex is producing illegal wares, the local authorities may well take exception! See this FAQ article.

  • Collisions.

It's unlikely that ship collisions will cause enough damage to take down a station's shields, but if you have built your complex such that one or more of the stations are overlapping each other (or another station or asteroid) then the shields will continually drop until the problem stations are finally destroyed. If this is the case you will usually hear a banging noise if you are close to the complex.

The obvious solution is to make sure your stations don't overlap when building the complex! You can resolve issues with an existing complex by self-destructing the complex hub, towing any offending stations apart, and then re-connecting everything. Alternatively, if you stay out of the sector then there is no collision damage.
