Can I own other ships?

Yes, you can OWN other ships, but you will not fly them yourself. Since your X-Fighter comes from another area of the universe, and uses much more advanced technology then the spaceships you can buy in the X universe, the only purpose of buying other ships is to increase your cargo capacity. The other thing you can do is enhance your X-Fighter with compatible technology like better shields and lasers (see next question).
