What is the difference between S/M/L when buying ships at a shipyard?

S, M and L refer solely to the level of equipment already installed on the ship:
  • S - No weapons, minimum shielding.

  • M - Basic weapons (not on Terran ships), medium shielding.

  • L - More weapons (not on Terran ships), maximum shields.

The actual ship is the same in all cases - buying 'S' or 'M' doesn't prevent you from later upgrading the shields and weapons yourself.

Note: The availability of the different levels randomly changes, both over time and when loading a game.
