[7B1][FEEDBACK] Reduced Game Speed

Post by alt3rn1ty » Sat, 6. Apr 24, 21:36

I posted this in another topic but I dont think Ego' will see it, so feedback regarding Reduced Game Speed setting :

@Egosoft

Could we have a small UI icon to indicate that Reduced Game Speed is active?.

I'm thinking if I load the game up a week from now, I will not remember if I had it enabled or not. And if you only use for example 75% its a bit awkward to tell if you have toggled the setting off or on.
Maybe a small Hour glass icon somewhere at the edge of the screen, maybe top left, not so conspicuous.
Or maybe next to where the in-game FPS counter shows up bottom right?.

I have been trying it out. 50% is a bit too much and slows down running on foot in stations (I know we can toggle it off/on again, but 75% is sweet and an acceptable slowing down of all things in the game.

Benefits :
Your bullets/lasers/bolts feel more awesome.
Landing at docks is more majestic feeling.
AI Pilot flying the ship you are standing in, in heavy asteroid sectors, seems to be better at collision avoidance.
This may be just me but my Hydra Regal with a 5* Pilot seems to have a better hit ratio when in a furball with a few Kha'ak.
My machine (see signature) in quiet sectors is now running the game at up to 110 FPS .. I have never seen this machine reach that before. 80-90 FPS is the best I have ever had before now.

I'm sure I am going to find more benefits but after a quick session those are what I have witnessed so far.

Its a marvellous setting to have, and the game feels like its at a more comfortable pace for me a geriatric gamer, which CBJ mentioned is the target audience for this setting.
I would imagine big battles with lots of big weapons spouting death will also feel more majestic.

Some kind of indicator is needed, at the moment I am trying to determine if when I load the game, that the previous game session saved the state of either "Reduced Game Speed" being active or inactive.

I am exploring the X'verse in a fast ship piloted by a 5 star pilot. IF I have the setting at 50%, then activating it while on the map view and noticing the difference in travelling speed is noticeable, however the same cant be said for when its at 75%.

When set to 75% the best way I can determine if it is actually active, is to go on foot in a station, and do a timed run between two points. If I then activate "Reduced game speed" the timed run will be longer duration.

I had to do this because I am pretty sure after reloading the game (from a previous save where the setting was activated), on loading, the setting was not activated.

Having an indicator somewhere on screen to easily reference if the setting is active would be very much appreciated.

Aswell as the request above for some kind of indicator ..

How will this work with Ventures?

Can we be at a reduced game speed while other Venture participants are not?
And if we can .. Would we be disadvantaged?

It will work with ventures the same way SETA does. Ventures already run on real time anyway.

Will we have slow-mo sounds with this mode? It's may be like indicator and real-time sounds with slow visuals looks strange...

Again, it's like SETA. You don't get extra-fast sounds with SETA, so you won't get extra-slow ones with slow speed mode. It's not "slow-mo" like in a film, where the sound follows the action precisely; it's there to help people who otherwise cannot keep up with the game. They don't need slow-mo sounds. If people want to use the feature for something else, that's entirely up to them, but we are not going to spend time "tuning" it for purposes it's not intended for.

I was right, this setting is not sticky, so you have to set it every time after loading up the game.

Reduce Speed Mode

Post by bhorton22 » Thu, 11. Apr 24, 22:58

There is mention of a 'Reduced Speed Mode' in the description of the update. Where is this accessed from?

It's in the Accessibility Options.

.. And you have to set up a Hotkey for it in Control options - Settings Controls General "Toggle Reduced Game speed"

Then while in game hit the hotkey, and whatever game speed reduction percentage you have set in Accesibility Options will become active. Hitting the same hotkey again will turn of the reduction.

At each game load if you want it to be active you have to hit the hotkey again, the setting is not sticky, so for those of us who would prefer to run the game at 75% all of the time we have to keep reselecting it.

And once again, this is the same as SETA. Its purpose is to allow the game to be slowed down at key moments, for those who need that facility.

The request for an indicator for it being active is something we support and will be aiming to add.

That wouldn't be very ideal, given that's where the missile indicator is.

Oh, I didn't realise because I hardly ever see or use missiles in my game.

In that case then another suggestion :

When SETA is active, there is a clockwise rotating ring becomes active on the dot on the right.

How about that same ring rotates anti-clockwise when Reduced Game Speed is active (makes sense in that it indicates game speed has been reduced instead of the SETA speeding it up)

For some reason, this does not seem to work for me.

I have bound the F12 key to the reduce speed mode and set it to 25% in the settings, but somehow pressing the F12 button does not change anything. Everything moves as fast as it does normally.

By the way, is (as a side effect) the game's CPU load reduced as well when the game speed is slowed down?

At 25% you would really notice if you have activated it, especially if you are trying to walk/run around a station 25% would be annoying the heck out of me.
Did you save the changes to your Control key settings?

I mentioned it in the first post of this topic, I think it is because the game engine has more time to do everything it needs to.
