660 ? Thats one of the slower ones then.

is this a scripted race ? if so, script yourself a speed and rudder upgrade.

Check your hull. You can get one of your ships to come nearby before you start the race, drop off a boost extension (which will give you a head start) and pick it up in the racing ship.

Your hull may be damaged. A few have found that to be the casem hence they can't keep up with the others.

If this is the mission race, you dont fly your own ship, you get given another ship to fly, and its deliberately below spec.

I had to script an upgrade to get through that mission, but many people say it can be done with good strafe drive usage.

The ship I had for my mission was a fully upgraded ship. I was as fast if not faster than the others. The boost gave me the headstart.

The differences between peoples games never ceases to amaze me.

The ship I got for that mission, was a good deal slower and substantially less rudder.

hmm... my ship did indeed seem slower than the competition, but i just outflew 'em and moved on ;)

that was one of the screwiest missions i've seen. randomly plunk you into a flying dumpster and tell you to hit checkpoints. bleh. i don't actually know what ship i was in, or what ship the opponents were in. i just used a lot of strafe to help me swing around corners and maintain speed, and ended up just barely behind the winner at the finish.

Thats the thing about that mission.

If you dont strafe, your knackered before you start. Bad assumption on the part of the dev who dreamed the mission up.

Maybe the idea was to make us improve out strafing skills! :D

In that case, there should have been a mention of it in the lead up.

For those who come to X3 and have never heard of strafe, you dont think about using a feature you dont know about.

And in my case, I dont like it anyway, I prefer brute speed.

If strafe was so important to a plot mission, then strafe training should have been included in the *cough* 'tutorial'.

I thought it was mentioned in the manual?

True about including it in tutorial. Maybe I'm just taking it forgranted.

2 lines that I only saw because I was looking for it. Not that it actually tells me anything other than its good for getting you out of the line of fire.

Not enough to use when you dont know what it really does.

Hi I had the same trouble as you had. Someone on the board helped me by sayin
Spoiler
Show

before the race starts aim at the target reticule and get ur ship up to max speed before the race starts so you fly through the gate before everyone alse. Once the cut sceen starts your engines are cut to zero i think by then you are already in the lead and just need to speed up again but but by then they will be doing the same so ur lead is still intact. I think it was that or something along those lines
Good luck.

I found that the ship was much better when I docked at the teladi trading station and installed maximum rudder optimisation - they may be able to go fast, but they waste a lot of time swinging wide at each checkpoint, so you can win by being neat with your manoevres :)

Can't say much more, can I ask which race this was?

Was it the one where you have to do it as a "favor" for that Teladi Guy, or as an actual BBS accepted mission? If it is the latter, then I've been doing something wrong, as I've lost the ability to enter any race via BBS. I did the mission version second time round.

Cheers,
RavenIII.

I started the race at max speed and i finished about 2-3KM before the rest cos its asy to outfly them.and never lower speed when turning just move the most a little more to compensate for rudder
