Power supplies [the searches is on] GO! GO! GO!
I have a Sony Vaio PCV-1142 and want to upgrade my power supply for use with a Geforce-7800 video card. My current power supply is made by Delta Electronics and it has a 295.4w capacity(model number is DPS-295AB A).
[]worst CPU ever[]
Sony Sony Sony for making things complicated and hard to find.
I was wondering if anyone could help me find a compatible psu of 450w-500w that will fit inside the vaio case(current psu is 6.5in long, 3.5in high and 4in deep). It could extend an inch further back, but no more.
[Brands I trust Antec, Hiper, Akaska, Thermaltake, OCZ]
(with 12V current rating of 20A or more) price ranging from 50$-$75 ][no more no less]
Post any that fit.No matter the price[might be able to find it cheaper elsewhere] no Sony models
So fire up those search engines..flex those fingers and Search!
The best of luck to the x3 community.

Ive got an Antec NeoPower 480. Really love the thing, it has advanced cable management (you can connect only the cables you want). It has SATA power connectors, two PCIe Connectors iirc. Also has two fan connectors. Has a 120mm fan (on the inside sucking air into the PSU, blowing it out on the back) for quietness (fan speed even depends on the power usages). And it supports both 20 pin and 24 pin MBs (20 pins via a converter from the 24 pin).
Costs a bit more than 75$ though, when i bought it (i think it was more like 100€). Dimensions are: 5.9" (D) x 5.5" (W) x 3.4" (H) . taken straight from the box, you can figure out if it fits yourself (afaik its a fairly standard size).

Sony made a small psu giving me very little room to upgrade.
I posted the dimensions. part of the problem is Sony made their Vaio computers with power supplies that are crucial to the air flow. People have been having problems with that.
Google my model number dps-295AB A Rev: 01 it and you'll see what I mean.
I can't find 1. I half to stay around the price range of $50-$75.
I already spent 245$ on the graphic card.

Dont know if the following concept might help? The link below is a review of a additional PSU that fits in a free 5 and a quarter drive bay.
http://www.reghardware.co.uk/2006/08/10 ... ooster_x3/
(He He its called the X3).
Couple of possible probs, 1) Thats a UK review and i would not know if there is a US equivalent. 2) Its £61, so in us dollars thats going to make it anything between $100 and $120 based on current exchange rates!
thats also assuming you have a 5 1/4 drive bay a) at all b) free!

TP-II 550
Features:
CrossFire-certified
SLI Ready
Single 120mm low noise fan
Dual 12V outputs, for stability and safety
True Spec noise level of 21.3 dBA measured at an independent lab using ISO 7779 standard
ATX12V 2.01 compliant. 24-pin main power connector with detachable 4-pin section
4 Serial ATA connectors
PCI Express graphic card power connectors
Dedicated output for more stability and less ripple noise
Feedback circuits for tighter load regulation (±3%) to maintain accurate voltage to all components
Industrial-grade protection circuitry prevents damage resulting from short circuits, power overloads, excessive current, excessive voltage , excessive temperatures
Fan Only power connectors allow True Power to control case fan speeds, reducing total system noise
MTBF: 80,000 hours
Dimensions: 5.9" (W) x 3.4" (H) x 5.5"(D)
Safety approval: CB, DEMKO, FCC Class B, FIMKO, EMKO, UL, VDE, TUV
Active Power Factor Correction (PFC) (Europe only)
Power Factor value greater than 90% (Europe only)
Gold plated connectors for superior conductivity
Important Note: The TruePower 2.0 Fan Only connectors are designed to power standard fans only. Attaching thermally-controlled fans to these connectors will likely result in unpredictable and undesired behavior. Thermally-controlled fans should only be connected to the standard 4-pin Peripheral Power Connectors. Please do not connect more than three fans to the Fan Only connectors.

This is why Im loath to buy an off the shelf "brand name" computer.
They use propriotory devices quite often. Dell is guilty of this, It killed Gateway.
Seriously now I have to ask why are you putting a very expensive video card into that machine ?
You are gimped by the cpu and bus architecture. Im sure you will see some improvement but frankly not all that much.

CPU : Intel Pentium 4 CPU 3.20GHz 3200 MHz
Memory : 1024 MB DDR2
Sound : Creative SB Audigy LS
Video : NVIDIA GeForce FX 5200
I just have a bad graphics card and power supply* everything else is just fine.
The power supply that I have currently costs 120$.
*the wattage is too low

costs
This is what I hate the most about the pc industry in general. Brand names always try to "engineer" their custom made mobos and psu so they can claim their stuff uses less power or some other bs that some sales guy is gonna rattle off to ya in the store. Also psu in general cost way too much right now because the psu companies wanna make some of that money you wanna spend on the new graphics card. They know you need the extra power so they are gonna stick it to ya while they can.
I was looking for a good psu for a while but can't afford it right now. I ended up wanting that hiper power supply that cost $100.00 no matter who you buy it from here in the states. I hear the euro version has better performance since that is where the brand comes from. I'm still running off of a two year old vantec 500 watt psu that had a really good review back in 04 over at tomshardware website.
A word of advice to you about sony systems... don't buy them and sell that one off as fast as you can. It really is better to build it yourself as long as you have some good info on what to get and how to build it.

my system used to run on a 400W psu with about 9case fans 2sata hdd and 1dvd burner and the frontbay of my soundblaster
the reason i had to replace it whas that one of the 3.3V lines had cut out and i only had 2.8V left under load this gave a few stabilety problems
i now have a 500W psu for when i upgrade my pc next year
edit : typo
