SETI units

Post by Lorien » Tue, 25. Nov 03, 00:20

Has anyone had a unit from SETI finish within 10mins? Normally they take anywhere between 8 and 12 hours to process through on my machine... The last one I had finished in 8mins 56secs.

If the data unit you download is corrupted or in some other way cannot be processed you will often get very short processing times. AFAIK you still get credit for processing that unit, even though the only result was "this is garbage"!

At the moment I'm in a team from my place of work--I might move over at some point, though.

Kinda' laughs at my 179.

How long you been doing SETI PJ?

I've been running it since March 2001, I think. Number of PCs I have running it varies over time--at the moment I only have two of them. However, since one of those is my home PC which can crunch a unit in about 3 hours, I tend to get through a few!

I'm at 1931 at the moment, looking forward to the great 2000.

I run it at work mostly, the machine chomps a unit in a little over four hours usually so that's about 4 a day (well, overnight actually).
Every hour injures, the last one kills.

Lucky people with your fast PC's, I've got a 1.2 and it takes about 56 hours for each unit, I'm only on 8 and it's been running for ages.........

That's way to slow - you must be running it on screensaver only. Some people also run more than 1 PC...

You definitely have a problem there. If my 2.6GHz PC can crunch units in 3 hours there's no way a machine around half as fast should be taking almost 20 times as long! For that matter, when I used to crunch SETI units on a 1.2GHz Athlon I was doing units in about 7 hours, not 56.

main pc; 1hr 40 min per WU (2 processes running at once, 3hr 20 min per WU. 3 hr 20min/2 = 1 hr 40 min per WU)
2nd PC: 42 hrs per WU (200@233 MHz P1 w/MMX)

(both using command line)

If your running it as a screensaver you can speed up the crunch time by choosing the option to go to a blank screen after, say, 2 min.
