Tsar did a Very Bad Thing

Post by Tsar_of_Cows » Sat, 18. Feb 12, 17:12

He bought another Tsarmobile.

Front.

Back

It's a 1989 Jaguar XJS with a 5.3 litre "High Efficiency" V12 engine. It has 300 horsepower. MPG is a very dirty word. It also has uprated suspension and goes like greased lightning.

It's a brilliant car. And I wanted one for ages. And it was a terrible, terrible idea. But I did it anyway.

The interior has been redone in the last 5 years so it's practically new, although some of the wood needs re-varnished, the leather is in fantastic condition and the roof lining (a perennial problem with the XJS) has been replaced to a high standard.

There is rust in all four wheel arches, the back panels and some superficial rust on the sills, I got most of the parts with the car, so I just have to get them fitted and sprayed. Non original parts are both axles (taken from another XJS), the suspension (racing shocks and anti roll bars were put in, it's seriously good, it sticks to the road like glue), and you can also see on the back that there's a line of red, that's where a panel off a red one has been put on (Though I think it looks quite good, like a continuation of the lights. Still that just needs to be resprayed).

I got the car for £1700. It came with £1700's worth of spares and uprated parts that a friend is going to help me put on. So I either got the parts for free or the car for free. I like to think I paid for the parts and they came with a free car! :P

I've got to pick up the bits next week and then me and my friend will replace the distributer cap and the power lines (with uprated bits) in a couple of weeks, as it had a slight misfire when I was test driving it, but the spark plugs were put in new recently.

Now... to sell the XJ.

Eurgh. I was hoping it wouldn't be too bad given I already drive an insurance group 20, with 6 years no claims and I only pay £470 fully comp with legal cover etc. etc.

A classic car insurer offered me £2029. They can ram that up their exhaust ports. I'll try Direct Line over the phone, their website exploded when I put in the car details D:

Edit: Admiral offered £650, that's more like it!

That's actually my Dad's garage, where it stays until I can get it insured. We got it in after shifting some stuff. I reversed into a chest of draws on the first attempt and there was still about 2 feet worth of engine sticking out the garage.

Obviously. Why would I need license plates?!

Actually I blanked them in paint.net before I posted them online.

When I red the title, Tsar did a very bad thing, my first thought was you were going to say you had got married. :D

I don't get it. Are you suggesting it's possible to get married by accident?

I think AdrianM may have been implying that 300 horsepower is actually not a lot from such a big engine--when you consider that a Ferrari F430 gets 483 bhp from a 4.3l engine, you can kind of see his point. However, an XJR is a grand tourer, not a fire-spitting sports car, so an engine tuned for somewhat lazier power delivery than a supercar isn't surprising to my eyes.
