station defense cap ships (chasing?) in adjacent zone(s)

Post by donzi » Tue, 10. May 16, 04:20

I have a station which requires protection but often I will find the ship assigned to the defense officer, chasing around a K in another zone.

EG:

omekron assigned to DO at station in twisted faith. It can often be found attacking a K in sixth scripture.

My guess (haven't witnessed it so far) is the K entered twisted faith and fled, my station defense ship chasing it.

It seems a bit loose a range to me. Based on the minimal IZ boosting (maybe no relation to OOZ) is zone to zone, seems like maybe they should boost back to home zone if somehow leaving it for any reason other than it's own flee tactic.

Bottom line, it can't protect the station it's assigned to if it isn't in the same zone. ;)

Granted, there are spots where a station may span into 2 zones (this isn't one of those cases), in such a case I suppose it could be wonky to boost home unless there is the possibility to have some sort of dual zoned home registration possible.

I've not noticed the situation happening with other stations, but then again nothing has ever called me to go look as this station does.

Maybe adjacent zones are permitted with an active target?

Maybe just some oddity with this station and location?

It was built in a named "Twisted Faith" spot, not an empty space one, fwiw.

Hmm, according to the player station DO script (fight.station.player.xml)... and the routine can get a bit complicated here.

A capship assigned to the DO with over 5000dps will patrol within the radar range of the station.

A capship with less than 5000dps will patrol within half the radar range of the station.

Small ships with over 100dps will be assigned to escort a trade ship assigned to the station manager (M-sized freighters get priority escort; if none available then they are assigned to escort capital trade ships).

If no trade ships are available to escort, they will patrol within the radar range.

Now the ships that do patrol are issued the order 'move.patrol', which dictates how the ship should move around the zone/object/sector... I don't see anything out of place here,. However, once its patrol range is set, patrol ships then receive the routine 'move.seekenemies' for the actual enemy-seeking behavior... this may be where things go wrong: It doesn't look like there's any sort of safety measure in place to prevent a ship from wandering too far away from an object, once it has spotted an enemy (unless the target leaves the radar range... which would be the case if the enemy ship did use the boost to escape, but there may be cicumstances under which the ship escaped but was spotted by your patrol ship, which made it chase further).

I read in another thread where someone suggested assigning a patrol ship to the CV, instead of the station DO, if you want to make sure the patrol doesn't wander out of range. If assigned to the CV, it would pretty much park right next to it until an enemy ship wanders into radar range.

Would tis assignmment be to a CV's DO or simply as a subordinate of the CV's captain?

When assigning to a ship, I don't think you can choose which crew to assign to. That's only for stations I think.

For some strange reason, you can only assign a defense ship to the Captain of the CV, not the DO!!!

Use the Architect.

With no build instructions given, a TRADE ship will Patrol the zone.
If you assign a FIGHT ship, it Patrol's by default as it can't trade.

Useful, tks! D'you know if it patrols near the CV, or does it wander off into the far reaches of the zone?

Depends on whether you have MICT or not.

As a general rule of thumb, assigning a ship to a CV, it will park next to the CV.

If you have MICT __AND__ you are in-zone, the ships will jump next to the hostile ship and chase it around the world if need be!!!! I have lost a lot of ships that way (in zone with captital ships assigned to CV).
