Orginazed Crime: Chapter 6: Break

Post by Mauser Kar98K » Mon, 10. Oct 05, 13:11

There is a transmission break that is little talked about amongst the Boron and the Argon. The two races keep close ties with each other so they established a communications break system. In the Argon Comm-Schools, they call it the “Early Retirement Plan” for the communications specialist.
Only the home worlds of the Argon and the Boron have it. Reason; to have a distress line open in case any large force that is beyond the control of sector defenses invades the home world. It signals all fleet ships, and allies of hostile actions, and request aid. The message is short and brief but to the point.
The transmitter is the size of a small city and has a one use only, before the energy cells and crystals get replaced. It is a pulse dish that sends a frequency faster than most news dishes. There isn’t a town for miles; the RF alone would vaporize any being near it. It is on the home world for easy reach by the government, and for sector defenses to give resistance so the message is sent.
The sound the break makes is described as having, “of all the voices screaming when the Earth was”, legend has it, “destroyed.” Though it becomes an attention getter to anyone on a load speaker, the sensitivity through a radioman’s headphones makes the eardrums bust. The good news for the sector defense is that they are given warning before they hit the transmitter. What sucks for the rest is that they don’t.
It was 1745 hours onboard the Intrepid, 15 Seizures before the changing of the guard. Berdan was finishing his reports and the referral of Genus in “the hot seat.” The rest of the crew was getting tired but kept close attention on their duties.
The Intrepid was traveling at full speed towards the South Gate, testing the engines and trying to break them. Shern was getting ready for the change of the guard as well and was flying with the two other Titans, The Eclipse and The Armada. The group had stationed itself by the East Gate, patrolling for any Pirate jumps. After all, it was a “memo” that suggested that they concentrate on Pirates.

The good thing for Communications Specialist 3rd class Hecter “Hertz,” was that he had one earphone off to pay attention to Captain for any orders:
“fizz…popperrrrr…fizzzzzz…………ERRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR…”
“…Oh Shit!” Hertz threw off his phones and grabbed his left ear and terrmindes pain. Ping looked over to see what that banshee sound was coming from, and see why Hertz really would curse, when he noticed him in great pain.
“Hertz what the hell happened?” Ping shouted to him. By now Captain Berdan had stood up with a curious eye to see what made someone say a “dirty-no-no-word” on his bridge. One rule on board his ship was no CUSEING!
Hertz coming somewhat to his senses reached over and pushed the speaker button for all to hear his ear killer.
Berdan couldn’t make what the awful sound was. Most of the crew, he noticed, had the hands over their ears, trying to muffle the scream. As soon as it began it stopped, but with the speaker magnets echoing the higher frequencies.
“What the hell was that…?” Inquired Chief but was broken off with his answer.
“This is the Boron Royal Council in Kingom’s End! We are under attack by a large number of Pirate forces with unknown number of Teliadi M2 and M1 Class ships. Request all Boron Naval Fleet ships jump now to Kingdom’e End. We will request Argon support if needed. Repeating, all Boron Naval Fleet ships jump to Kingdom’s End. We will request Argon support when needed. Please monitor all Boron channels. End Message.”
Berdan reached over to his chair and pushed the inter-ship communications system’s button, “G.Q., G.Q., all crews to your stations. Pilots be on stand-by at your ships. Have them prepped and ready. Captain out.” Berdan turned to “radio stack,” “Hertz! Hertz!”
Hertz was balling, but he turned to his Captain. He couldn’t make out what he was saying. He tried reading his lips but all he could get out was, “Turn to the mourn chance.”
“Hertz, turn to the Boron channels,” Berdan was about to repeat to him loader but saw the blood coming from his left ear. “Chief, take Hertz’s post.” Again Berdan reached over to the ISCS, “Sick-bay to the bridge! Helmsman, Full stop!”
Chief helped Hertz to the floor and jumped into his seat. He saw several incoming message flashes on the station’s monitor. He picked the first and sent it through the load speaker.
“Berdan, this is Shern! What do you make of this?”
“I don’t know, sounds like a Teliadi-Pirate backed offensive against the Boron to me. Listen up!
I am placing your battle group under my command. Leave one of your ships at the East Gate and send the rest to the North Gate.”
“Aye sir, I will leave the Armada, here. She has the weakest of defense. Good, Chief is taking over communications until the Shift changer gets up here. Hertz is bleeding out the left ear.”
“Yes, my comm-station operator is deafer than an ore, so is the Armada’s. Luckily the Eclipse was changing the guard early.”
“Ya, good for them. I’ll be doing a turn-around here in five mizuras, gonna make-sire nothing comes from behind. Then I am going to park this instrument of war twenty klicks out side of the North Gate.”
“Aye that, Revenge out.”
“Sir, nother message!” Reported Chief.
“Patch it through, Chief.”
“This is Brennan of the Argon One. Captain Berdan, you are on full alert. Keep me posted on anything that happens in Three Worlds.”
“Aye Sir!”
“Argon One out.”
“Sir! Boron reporting that they destroyed the Teliadi M1, but are taking heavy looses on the fleet. Pirates are fighting hard.”
“Thanks Chief! Ping, anything on scopes?”
“No sir, just two empty cargo ferries. They don’t even have beer in them.”
“Crap, we just might need the beer after all this!” Replied Berdan, trying to an upbeat in the crew, “Chief what is the delay in the messaging from the Boron?”
“About 4 mizuars, the last message was spotty.” Another incoming message popped up on the screen. “Sir, it’s the Revenge.”
“Berdan, we are here, want me to set up a “V” ambush?”
A “V” ambush is were two Titans postion themselves with engines almost touching, spreading out into a “V” to face an incoming threat. This allows for maximum coverage of fire, but allows a lesser chance of crossfire.
“Yes,” Berdan confirmed. “Plus have your ships bank so you top turrets can have a little fun.”
“Rodger that Captain, Revenge out.”
“For once the bridge was silent. Berdan looked around at his crew. CS2 Flournce “Vox,” who was a skilled radioman, but lacked the discipline, finally replaced chief. He is one of Berdan’s favorites.
“Sir,” started Vox, “The Boron are reporting that they have lost sixty percent of their fighting force overall. Two Sharks and the lead M1 were destroyed by two Teliadi Phoenixes. Their fighter strength is dewdiling and several TPs have jumped into the sector. They are also reporting that an estimated count of 500 Pirate craft or more are in the area. Several Teliadi ships make up this number.”
“Rodger that Vox.” Berdan sat in his chair. He was amazed of the 500 craft report. He didn’t knew the Pirates even had that many. What was puzzling to him was that they were fighting like an organized fleet would and, with cruises and a carrier.
Berdan checked the number of energy cells he had onboard. With the possibility of a jump into Kingdom End at moments notice, he wanted the power to do so. He then checked the readability of his fighters. The screen showed that the Delta-Betas and the Double D’s were ready, but no word on the Nova Cats.
“Bridge to hangar, deploy Delta-Betas. Head off to the North Jump Gate behind the Revenge and the Eclipse. If they the two Titans start getting their butts handed to them, then engage the enemy. But don’t engage until then.”
“Rodger that!” Came back a voice confirming the order.
Berdan looked at the time. His five mizuras were up. If anything was going to jump it would have happened by now.
“Chief, are the Delta-Betas deployed yet?”
“No sir! They are about to open the second airlock door.”
Berdan reached over, again, and pushed the intercom switch, “All crew, secure all loose equipment and strap yourselves in.
Chief, strap yourself in. Everyone else tighten your belts, this is going to be rough.” Berdan snapped his duel belts together and tightened them to were he couldn’t breath. He waited for the comm-link to turn red from the hangar bay. It light to life,
“Sir, this is Bay Chief Therm, we are secured down here. The rest of our fighter wings are strapped in waiting for deployment. We are still having a little delay in the Nova Cats though, but the pilots are starting their power ups.”
“Tell them to hang on! All crew brace yourselves.”
Berdan turned to Markus, “Helmsman, pay close attention to me. I want you to put us in full reverse and activate the strafe drive.”
Markus pulled the throttle arm all the way back and typed in the activation code for the drive, “done sir!”
Berdan felt the ship jolt backwards.
“Great, now input the forward right drive only to operate at full power.”
Again, Markus typed in the commands in the system, “Done sire!”
“Okay, turn off the autopilot and grab the stick.” Berdan looked down to see Markus’s hand on the controls.
“Okay Markus, rudder at full left, activate the strafe drive…”
The Intrepid shifted hard to the left, shaking the crew against their belts. The South Gate disappeared from the view of the bridge as the ship turned at it’s fierce pass.
Berdan looked at the ecliptic projector on the left arm of his chair. The ship had turned forty-five degrees from its point.
“Start adding some forward thrust.”
Markus pushed the throttle forward with ease. The speed went from a negative reading, to zero, and ten clicks and counting.
Now the Intrepid had turned ninety degrees when Markus started giving thrust. The bridge was feeling the blunt of this maneuver with the nose doing most of the turning. To Berdan, that was about to change.
The projector showed that the Intrepid had past one hundred and forty degrees, “Helmsman, shut-off the strafe drive, full power with boost.”
Markus did as he was ordered. After hitting the boost extension on the throttle arm, the ship began to shack. The crew was thrusted back in their seats, some of them wishing they had done more physical training than was recommended by the Navy.
“…Warning, approaching…5…G’s,” came the onboard computer.
“Shut-up woman and move your ass!” Shouted Berdan.
After bad mouthing the ship, he heard her reply with moans of the steel creeping from the excess torture. He looked again at the ecliptic projector and noted that they were heading towards the North Gate.
“Markus, straighten us out. Set a heading towards the North Gate.”
“Aye sir!” Markus pushed the stick to the right to add counter steer and targeted the gate and sat the autopilot.
“Bridge to crew, report on damage,” ordered Berdan.
“Hangar requests sick bay. One of the weapons tech has hit his head.”
“…sick bay on the way.”
“Mess hall here. Just pot and pans on the deck nothing else.”
“Engineer reporting, all’s well.”
Chief turned to Berdan, “hull integrity satisfactory sir.”
Berdan looked around the ship and saw the bridge wasn’t damaged and no one was hurt.
“Damn, they put together one hell of a ship, lets see if it can hold it’s own,” said Berdan.
The Intrepid was riding in, after doing a 180 without stopping, the crew waiting to live up to it’s name.

Good read, though I have trouble understanding why he'd damage the ship in a manoeuvre like the one at the end when they are going into battle. They don't appear to be too close to the gate to make such a turn a necessity ;)

Looking forward to the continuation.

If you read real carefully, he just stressed the ship, not damaged it. Besides it's space trials. Ever heard of sea trials before. They take a ship out and try to break it, fix it, then try to break it again. You will see the methode to Berdan's one-eyed madness. Oh, and I am diffently not flaming. I am actually expecting the flaming and the critism because; this is my first write for fan fiction. My knowledge of the X-Universe is real shady and the only dudes I have really zapped have been a little Xenon attacks and Pirates. I have also only been in the Argon, Boron and Telaidi Systems with crossing the Split and Paranid systems every few times. But most of the X-universe from what I can research is up in the air anyways.

My sytle of writing is more character interactive and having the characters Dialog explain the situation and let your mind come up with how they are postioned as they talk. But that is somewhat about to change. 8)

Chapter 7 and 8 are coming, might post both in one thread, Kinda shorter than 6 and tad bit not as exciting, but leading up type thing. Hopefully might have it up tonight.
