Organized Crime Chapter 7; Montage

Post by Mauser Kar98K » Sat, 15. Oct 05, 11:44

Corps walked to his “avenger” with a “get down to business” look on his face. Like all commanders with wingmen, Corps was worried. He knew he trained them well, very well. But they have never seen combat like he has, they don’t have their skills fine-tuned like they need to be, and with relative new ships.
Lt. Whith went up to Corps to give him the status report of his squad plus the current load outs and orders. Whith was an Argon officer, but born as a Split. Been described as the most unforgiving being on the Intrepid, Whith doesn’t take failure with a “try better” speech. He yells at everyone who doesn’t complete the job that needs to be done.
His big fall back, being Split. He worked hard to get the respect and reputation that he has. Been called a spy and a traitor all in the same sentence makes one who choose a better race to show that they are worth their weight in majelit.
“Your ships are loaded for Xenon. Hornets, and silkworm missils, 5000 rounds of mass driver ammunition, and energy cells in case you need to jump. The orders from Captain Berdan is, ‘Destroy any pirate forces entering into system.’”
“Is the squad ready!?” asked Corps.
“Yes Flight Leader. Last pilot and gunner to strap in were Ensign Stack and gunner Trens.” Whith could sound so calm during emergency drills or incidents that people thought that he was using spaceweed. “Be warned sir, the Boron has sent a report that there are 500 pirates in the Kindom’s End.”
Corps gazed look of dismay at Whith. “500! When did they get orginazed?”
“Not my department sir,” Whith replied while looking at the hand help computer.
Corps walked up the small ramp on his Nova and raised it. He looked back towards the gunner seat and saw Petty Officer Second Class Brant was hitting the switches and knobs at his “throne.” Corps then dropped down at the controls of the Avenger. After strapping himself down, throwing the engine switches and opening the comm-links, Corps addressed his squad.
“Listen up. There is a ninety percent possibility that we will be engaging pirates. We will be split apart and we will be somewhat on our own. The Boron has reported 500 pirates in the area, plus M2s. Don’t stay on one ship for 20 sezures. Keep channels open, request help if you need it, and aid those who do. Low chatter, and keep an ear out.
Menace, you’re with me! Keep right with me. Stack, Gulfer, you two have each other’s wing. Everyone got it?”
“Menace here, we got ya boss.”
“Three here, Rodger that,” reported in Stack.
“Gulfer reporting in, read you loud and clear sir!”
The sounds of the generator started coming through his helmet. The engines whined to life on the “Ellen,” which Corps named after his dear mother, and the control panel was lighting up.
“Flight control to Novacats, you will be launching with Double D’s. Do you copy?”
“This is Novacat one, we copy. Okay gents. This is it; form up with the Double D’s. Double stack formation and be ready with the boost extensions when the doors let fly.”
The hangar crew disconnected the cables and plasma lines from the Ellen. Corps reached over to the left side of the panel and activated the on-world hover control. After the little jingle came through his helmet, Corps pulled straight up on the stick. Not back but up. This activated the bottom vertical thrusters and gently lifted the Nova up.
Corps had to start countering the pitch of his boat after the landing gear was released from its duties. Once the ship was leveled, he pitched the nose up and gave thrust. Ellen started moving forward towards the airlock where the Double D’s were forming up.
Corps switched the channel to the ships comm, “How you doing back there?” He asked Brant.
“Enjoying the view of course. Looks like the hangar crew is enjoying our ion wash.”
Corps chuckled, “only way they get a breeze in here unless they open the windows. I don’t see that happening. Anyways you ready for this?”
“Yes sir, I got the Mass Driver ready and barf bags under my chair. This will be like our tour in Black-hole Sun man.”
“Oh ya, but this is Pirates, not them stress related Xenon.”
The Novacats flew to the double doors hovering just inside the first part of the airlock. Stacked two by two, with Corps on the top right, Menace to his left and the rest below them. The double stack formation is a favorite to a squad of Novas due to the concentration of 4 guns to the rear.
Corps reached over and actives the Silkworm missiles in the missile bay. He then switched his main guns to BHEPTs from the mass drivers, which all Novacats had three of them as base weapons on board. The third was for the turret gunner.
“Okay Novacats, set for hover and get stay in position inside the airlock.”
After Corps got the confirmations, he moved to the top of the airlock and waited. The ship automatically went to a hovering position, so Corps took his hands off the controls and continued the set up.
“Sir, the Double D’s are ready for launch, they are closing the hangar door.” came his gunner.
“Rodger, okay gang here we go.”
The lights inside the hangar by flickered on to life as the door behind them closed with a heavy clang as the door locked itself. Slowly stars appeared in front of Corps. The second door slowly opened.
With the door halfway open, Corps applied the throttled and busted out of the Intrepid with a blue Ion trail behind him. The rest of the Novacats stayed behind him. As soon as he cleared the landing guides, he cut the throttle and turned around and headed North towards Shern and the Revenge.
They were half way across the sector when the deployed. The squad pumped up and charged for what ever was about to face them.
Then the Double D’s passed them.
