Unless you change the settings for a game in the Steam client, patches for that game will be downloaded and installed automatically. Updates will be applied automatically when your Steam client is restarted, so if you know that an update has been released but you do not yet have it yourself then try simply restarting the Steam client.
You can disable automatic updates to prevent them from happening at inconvenient times, but you are advised to keep this option enabled as much as possible to ensure that your game is kept up to date. If you want to be absolutely sure that none of your games are updated when you don't want them to be, then you also have the option of switching the Steam client to offline mode.
All of the above applies whether you bought your Steam game online or on DVD.
Note: We will not be providing alternative means to download and install patches for games that are distributed exclusively via Steam and/or using Steamworks on DVD.
