How to use the wingman as a brake?

One of my favourite tricks is the use of wingmen to avoid collisions when on auto pilot. Many players have noticed that carriers are inordinately fast, and that very often, when left on auto pilot, these ships are responsible for a great number of collisions, which can adversely affect the player's standing with many races.

My solution to this is to have a couple of slower wingmen (Argon Novas are good, but any ship which hasn't been tuned with a maximum speed above 160m/s is ideal). Usually, these ships are carried on board the carrier, and are set as wingmen. When I fly the carrier manually, I can make best use of the high speed, and can avoid collisions. When using the auto pilot to travel a long distance, I hit Shift+7 first, to call out the slow wingmen and make them fall into formation. While they do this, I select the destination for the auto pilot. Once under way, the carrier will slow down to accommodate the slower speed of the wingmen, allowing me the luxury of SETA and/or a cup of tea.
