Cargo comes in small (S), medium (M), large (L), extra large (XL) and station-sized (ST) containers. These sizes determine what products you can or can not fit into your ship. For example, TS class ships can carry up to XL sized goods, while the M4 class can carry only up to M sized goods. TL class ships are the only ships able to carry ST size containers, simply because of their huge size.
