2 billion (2,000,000,000 Cr) in X3TC and 2 quintillion (2x10^18 or 2,000,000,000,000,000,000 Cr) in X3AP. Any credits over that which are destined for your personal account will simply disappear.
You can also store credits in each station or complex that you own – if you're approaching the limit it's a good idea to spread some credits around your stations. Be sure not to put too much money in a station though; each station can only hold 2 billion credits at most. In addition to the money on station accounts, also the maximum amount of money that can be transferred at once is limited to 2 billion credits.
Please note that in X3AP not all menus display the full amount of money. Some may be truncated to the number of millions you have if your balance gets really big, others like the trade and station management menus display the old limit of 2 billion credits at the maximum.
