The game start you choose affects:
- Your initial pilot name (you can change this in-game).
- Your initial sector.
- Your initial cash.
- Your initial ship(s), and what equipment and upgrades are installed.
- Your initial reputation with the different races.
Some starts have additional short-term difficulties, such as extra tasks to complete, bounty hunters chasing you, or restrictions on your race reputation.
Note: If you choose the 'Custom' start you do not have access to any of the main plots.
Apart from the above, the game start has no effect on combat difficulty, rewards, or anything else in the game.
