I want to play the game in (borderless) window mode, but my desired resolution is not available. What can I do?

There's a file called "res.dat" in the game folder, which contains the standard list of window mode resolutions in the form of pairs of numbers representing the window width and height in pixels. This file can be amended using a standard text editor, to add to or otherwise modify the available windowed mode resolutions. To do so:
  1. Navigate to your game folder. (Please note that the res.dat is shared between X3TC and X3AP. So even if you play X3AP, you'll find the res.dat file in the X3TC game folder.)

  2. Open the file "res.dat" with the normal MS Windows (text) Editor. (Any other text or xml editor will work too, but not a word processor like Wordpad or Microsoft Word.)
If you cannot find the file, make sure that your game is updated to the latest version. (If you play X3AP, this includes X3TC.)

  3. Add your desired resolution to the list, whereby the first value represents the window width and the second the window height in pixels. Please also note the hints to valid values below.

  4. Save the file.

  5. Now start the game and choose your desired resolution from the game starter's Graphics Settings menu.

The game will ignore resolutions with a width value of less than 1024 and/or a height of less than 600 (though note that a height of less than about 640 will result in some menus overlapping the info panels at the bottom of the screen). If the file is missing or corrupted then the game will revert to its built-in list of windowed mode resolutions.

Note: Valid resolutions for full screen mode are defined by the graphics driver and cannot be amended using this file. However, most drivers do provide a similar means to add or amend the available full screen resolutions.
