Since X even runs on the first generation 3D accelerators which are VERY widely spread (S3 Virge, ATI Rage etc.) the visual quality and performance can be quite different. In general you can say that on these first generation accelerators, you can only play X in low resolutions (512*384 for example is a nice compromise between visual quality and performance), while on newer cards (Voodoo 1 and 2, Power VR, Mattrox G200, Riva etc.) you can play at much higher resolutions and get more detailed 3D models and light effects.
