Carrier Class. Ships of this class are able to economically bring large swarms of fighters (or corvettes and bombers in the case of the Aran, Kyoto and Valhalla) into battle while delivering some capital ship grade damage to enemies at a distance.

Functions and applications

M1 carriers are designed to move large fighter squadrons across large distances efficiently.   In addition to the huge hangars M1s can also mount capital ship class weaponry and use heavy missiles to support carried fighters while the large cargobays allow them to resupply docked fighters.   If filled with Thunderbolt or Tornado Missile compatible ships (the Solano (M4+) is good) or the Medusa Prototype (M3+) which can fire Firestorm Torpedoes and Typhoon Missiles an M1 can quickly destroy an entire sector.   The poor Laser Energy Reload Rates of M1s (Tokyo, Odin and Woden excepted) mean that in sector they quickly run out of Laser Energy during long skirmishes making them vulnerable to being killed by any ship larger than an M6 if directly engaged without a fighter escort.   Out of sector the energy limitations do not apply so some M1s (especially the mass producible Xenon J) can even pose a threat to M2 ships in one on one combat.

As M1s that need to be boarded to be obtained are seldom alone, they pose a serious challenge to acquire.   When boarding is completed the owned ships of the target do not revert to neutral if the player leaves the sector.   This means if the fighters and other escorts are ignored then the Cargo Lifesupport System and Jumpdrive are highly likely to be destroyed before the acquisition can be jumped to safety if it is not outright demolished.  Killing the escorts is potentially a reputation disaster able to easily bring the player down from +10 to <(-2) which will result in asset destruction (destruction of mines is the greatest worry as those cannot be replaced) in all sectors owned by the race in question.   It is advisable to be patient and only board M1s that have already depleted most of their escort or in the case of the Shuri to slowly whittle down the escort and replenish race rank by doing missions until it is ready to be boarded.   It is also a good precaution never to have any mines in sectors owned by a race with an M1 available through boarding only that has not yet been obtained in case things go badly.
