In order to trade with a station remotely, you will need another ship docked at the station you wish to trade with. The only exception to this is if you want to buy a ship from a Shipyard, in which case any ship, satellite, station or other property anywhere in the sector will do. You also need to have the Trading System Extension installed in the ship you are actually sitting in (not the ship that is in the station).
Highlight the station in the list next to the sector map and press Enter. Now press the L key to see all landed ships on that station. If you ship is docked there it will show up on the list. Highlight your ship and press Enter again. Now select press the D key to "Trade with Station". You will now be able to transfer goods to/from the docked ship.
