To manually retrieve astronauts (or marines) you just need to fly over them. Be sure to fly directly over the spacesuit, and don't fly too fast. You must have a Cargo Lifesupport System installed, and enough free cargo space (as described here). Note that fighters can only carry normal astronauts, not marines.
You can also use the 'Collect Astronaut' command to order the autopilot to retrieve either a specific astronaut, all marines in a sector, or all astronauts in a sector. This requires a small ship (fighter, TS, TP) with free cargo space, Cargo Lifesupport System, and Special Command Software.
- Bring up the ship command console - 'shift-c' (for your personal ship), or select the ship and press 'c' (for a remote ship).
- Select 'Special…'.
- Select 'Collect Astronaut…'. This will bring up a further menu.
- Select 'Collect all astronauts' to order the ship to collect all astronauts and marines in the sector. If there are no astronauts or marines to collect the ship will idle.
- Select 'Collect all marines' to order the ship to collect all marines in the sector. If there are no marines to collect the ship will idle.
- Select 'Collect astronaut...' again if you want to pick up a specific astronaut or marine. This will bring up the galaxy map - select the sector and then the astronaut.
