A TLA is a Three Letter Acronym. Not all the acronyms used have three letters, of course!
Ship Classes
Ships are divided into classes according to their purpose. Each race has one type of ship in eacg class.
M0 | Battleship class ships | M1 | Carrier class ships | M2 | Destroyer/Cruiser class ships | M3 | Heavy fighter class ships | M4 | Medium fighter class ships | M5 | Scout class ships | M6 | Corvette class ships | TS | Transport Ship | TL | Transport Large (can transport Station kits) | TP | Transport Personnel/Passenger |
Note: The description Cruiser is used by some players for M2 class ships and by others for M6 class ships
Ship Variants
For ships smaller than an M2, each race has some variants of the basic ship types. Not all races have all variants available to buy at ship yards, and some don't even exist in a normal game. Fighters (M3/M4/M5) have up to 4 variants, typically having the following characteristics, though there is some variation so these rules do not always hold.
Raider | Faster, less shielding and less cargo | Vanguard | Faster, sometimes less shielding, sometimes better weapons | Hauler | Slower, more cargo space | Sentinel | Slower, more shielding, sometimes less cargo space |
Small freighters (TS) also have variants, again depending on race and again with not all variants being available for all ships.
Hauler | Slower, more shielding, more cargo space | Miner | Slower, more shielding, more cargo space | Tanker | Slower, more shielding, more cargo space | Tanker (larger version) | Even slower, more shielding, more cargo space | Super-freighter SF | Even slower, more shielding, more cargo space | Super-freighter (larger version) | Even slower again, even more shielding, even more cargo space |
Ship Equipment Levels
When buying a ship at a shipyard, different models are available with different levels of equipment. Not to be confused with cargo classes.
S | No weapons, minimum shielding | M | Basic weapons, medium shielding | L | Maximum weapons, maximum shields |
Ship Nicknames
A few ships have standard nicknames. Examples include "Oddy" for Odysseus and "Ellie" for Elephant.
Cargo Classes
Classes of cargo that a ship may, or may not, be able to carry. Not to be confused with ship equipment levels.
S | Small | M | Medium | L | Large | XL | Extra Large | ST | Station |
Each trade ware has a cargo class and takes up a specific amount of ship cargo-hold, for example one unit of Rastar Oil takes up 6 units of space in M class containers, a unit of Argnu takes up 4 units in S class containers, and an Ore Mine takes 8000 units in ST class containers.
Weapons
Weapons are divided into types. Each type has a version, indicating the strength of that weapon. Most weapon types have several variants: Alpha, Beta and occasionally Gamma. The Alpha costs the least, has the fastest fire rate and uses the least energy, but does the least damage. The Gamma variant is the most expensive, slow firing and energy-draining, but does the most damage. Unsurprisingly, the Beta variant is somewhere between the two. The variants are normally abbreviated to A, B and G and added as a prefix to the laser name abbreviation.
IRE AIRE BIRE | Impulse Ray Emitter | PAC APAC BPAC | Particle Accelerator Cannon | HEPT AHEPT BHEPT | High-Energy Plasma Thrower | FAA FLAK AFAA AFLAK BFAA BFLAK | Flak Artillery Array | PBE APBE BPBE | Pulsed Beam Emitter | PPC APPC BPPC GPPC | Photon Pulse Cannon | PSG APSG BPSG GPSG | Phased Shockwave Generator | KYON AKYON BKYON GKYON | Kyon Emitter (Kha'ak ships only) | |
ID IonD | Ion Disruptor | MD | Mass Driver | TB | Tractor Beam | LT | Laser Tower | FD | Fighter Drone |
Stations
There are many different types of space stations in the game, but only a few types have commonly-used abbreviations.
EQ EqD ED | Equipment Dock | GT | Goner Temple | OM SM | Ore/Silicon Mine | PAP | Pirate Anarchy Port | PB | Pirate Base | PHQ | Player Headquarters | TCHQ | TerraCorp Headquarters | TD TS | Trading Dock/Station | SPP | Solar Power Plant |
